Oregon Arts Watch

Research on innovation in public urban green spaces

6. BACKGROUND

The primary vision of the Creek Colleges project is to enliven community in efforts surrounding their local watershed. The project is designed to evolve naturally with the essence of the neighborhood. Our hope is to build a more resilient community through a shared need for a more resilient environment.

Creek College was born out of a series of conversations with conservationists. We met to discuss the arts as a catalyst for activating community around restoration needs. In these conversations it became clear there was a need to bring community back to a site repeatedly in order to develop and grow a relationship to the place itself. Additionally, we saw possibilities for empowering community to take on leadership roles as local stewards and advocates.

Our natural spaces and resources need to be cared for more than ever before, and people naturally want to take care of places they feel connected to. We believe that the way to form and strengthen a connection to place is through physically experiencing and interacting with it. Art and design, along with a little Creek College magic, can be catalysts for that connection.
